School counselors are licensed counselors who work in elementary, middle and high schools. Those who work with students in kindergarten to eighth grade focus on assisting students with academic and behavioral issues. They pay close attention to students with emotional issues, such as abuse at home or learning disabilities.
Counselors working in high schools also assist students with social issues, career development and college preparation. These professionals are typically required to have a master's degree in school counseling. Each state also has its own qualification requirements for certification. There is a variety of school counseling programs throughout the United States.
