Position Profile

The Arizona School Counselors Association, Inc. is seeking an Executive Director candidate who possesses a collaborative/shared leadership style. This is a new position for our Association. This candidate will have the ability to innovate, self motivate and engage a variety of stakeholders. The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities include providing leadership for AzSCA, managing our strategic plan, developing and engaging members.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and functions under the direction of the current Chair of the Board. The Executive Director does not replace committees, but enhances their work. The Executive Director is a non-voting participant at the Board of Directors and Governing Board meetings. An annual honorarium of $15,000 in the approved budget is paid to the Executive Director. Reimbursements for official expenditures are vouchered in accordance with AzSCA by-laws. He or she will work closely with the Board of Directors, offering direction and implementation of the AzSCA vision into mission-oriented results.

This position will be salaried for approximately 15 hours on average per week. This position will be active 12 months a year.

Advocacy is a key component to being an effective school counselor. Not only is it critical for school counselors to serve as advocates for the students, it is also important that school counselors advocate for their own profession. We advocate at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Shall represent AzSCA at advocacy events throughout Arizona (speaking at these events is anticipated).
  • Shall be responsible for the enhancement of AzSCA’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, educational, civic, and private organizations.
  • Shall enhance AzSCA’s mission through education, face-to-face contact, and other effective communication methods.


  • Shall respond to requests for services from AzSCA members and others;
  • Shall correspond when necessary to all members of the Board of Directors and/or Governing Board;
  • Shall maintain a record of activities, with copies sent to the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis;
  • Shall remain current in technology skills to engage the membership in a variety of communication methods;
  • Shall develop a master calendar of events and a publication timeline for AzSCA, update them monthly and present them to the Board of Directors for approval prior to the beginning of the fiscal year;
  • Shall cultivate and manage relationships with local, state, and national counselor advocacy groups and professional organizations;
  • Shall conduct surveys and assessments to determine vital information and effectiveness;
  • Shall assist with marketing and other communication efforts as designated;
  • Shall write and publish Executive Director messages in both AzSCA and ASCA newsletters.

  • Shall model positive leadership, integrity, respect, sound judgement, and effective communication, while embracing new ideas and change;
  • Shall develop and maintain individual relationships with each committee chair and the association governing board members to achieve effective balance for support, guidance, input, teamwork, and results.

Resource Development/Fiscal Management

  • Shall provide input in the preparation of an operating budget;
  • Shall submit expense reports to the business manager per policies and procedures;
  • Shall positively represent the organization to current and future funding sources;
  • Shall ensure a positive working relationship with and assist the business manager in long range financial planning and resource allocation for the annual budget.
